Phnom Penh Police blotter

It’s been a long time since I bought you all some of the happenings around the crime scene so here you go……..

Family money funnelled into personal drug fund
He may not be his brother’s keeper, but a Phnom Penh resident had every intention of at least being his brother’s money’s keeper on Sunday. Police in Meanchey district said they picked up the 28-year-old hothead while he was attempting to score drugs. A quick interrogation found the funds had been siphoned from his sibling, though in an instance of true brotherly love, to protect him, the sibling had not filed a complaint. All the same, the young addict is headed for court. Koh Santepheap

Neighbours’ complaints get gamblers gagged
Christmas came early for residents of a Kampong Cham town street plagued by an ongoing card game. Police said the normally quiet street had become a favourite haunt of gamblers of late, leading to neighbourhood residents dropping the dime on the curbside shenanigans. Cops swooped down on the street on Saturday, managing to nab four men mid-game and sending the quartet to face the judge. Koh Santepheap

Unidentified hooligans unleash wrath on man
A masked mob took their aggression out on a 20-year old man in Banteay Meanchey’s Poipet town on Sunday and turned him into pulp. Police said neighbors found the battered victim lying in a pool of blood and whisked him off to hospital, where doctors declared he had a badly broken arm. Police are still searching for the faceless suspects. Rasmey Kampuchea

Hit-and-run leaves three seriously hurt
Three motorbike passengers were seriously injured in a hit and run accident yesterday in Stung Treng province. Young fisticuffs scuffler faces arrest, court date
A 23-year old man wanted by the court for practising his boxing skills on another man was arrested at his home on Sunday in Kandal province. Police in Saang district said that the aspiring pugilist confessed that he seriously injured the victim when they had a fight. Police has since handed him over to the court. Rasmey Kampuchea

Never steal a 70cc when  you’re on CCTV
A Joyriding garment worker’s freedom was not even hanging by a thread on Wed-nesday after she was caught on video stealing her colleague’s Honda Cub motorbike. After making a getaway from the factory, in the capital’s Dangkor district, on the 70cc moto, it was another type of CC – a security camera – that proved her undoing. Police said the owner checked the CCTV footage at the factory and relived the woman’s crime, which led to police arresting her. Koh Santepheap

Wrong too strong for wife of wan Don Juan
A Lackluster lothario turned in a pitiful performance when he unsuccessfully tried to entice his wife into making a romantic getaway with him on a stolen motorbike. Police said the suspect stole his friend’s moto on Wednesday night and, rather unimaginatively, hid it in a forest to collect the next day. The man tried to lure his wife to Kampong Cham in the morning, but upon noticing their carriage was a rather unappealing – and stolen – moto, she was suitably turned off. The man rode solo and was arrested the next day. Kampuchea Thmey

Picked, pickpocketed by a pack of park punks
Punks who packed a punch picked a phone from a pocket – and  picked a fight in the process – in a park on Saturday. Police said the victim was sitting in a garden when the two suspects approached him. One of them forced a phone from the man and, when the victim shouted for help, the larger of the two men began to beat him. His cries alerted nearby police who arrived in time to arrest the suspects. Nokorwat

Breakfast arrest yet another wake-up call
An unrepentant drug dealer who refused to answer his previous wake-up calls was arrested on Saturday for a fifth time – this time over breakfast. Officers from the anti-drug department and Pursat provincial police swooped down on the 29-year-old man, crashing his morning meal, and arresting him for drug possession. Still hungry for more, they raided the house, confiscating drug equipment from his bedroom. Kampuchea Thmey

Man meets tragic end in electrical accident
A construction worker died from electrocution at a road works site in Kampong Cham province’s Cheung Prey district on Saturday while carrying electric wires. Police said the victim, 19, from Batheay district, was installing electricity in the office of Sian Hai Construction Company, but he did not have the experience to do so. He was sent to hospital immediately but died on the way. DAP News

Fascinating! Since I’m a retired cop, tell me – what is the penalty for drug possession in Cambodia? Do they tend to “lock them up and throw away the key” for various things, or are they lenient?

    • Dave ….i think they are “re-educated” which means having their head shaved and been given a solid flogging over a few months. Soft drugs like grass aren’t such a big deal here but ice and heroin are big and they go down hard for that…
