Every morning for the last two and a half years I have taken to same route to work on my motorbike. It’s not a very long ride from Russian Market – about 2km – BUT it is right up there with this road in my opinion. Ok ….so I don’t have the steep drop off to contend with BUT the Yungas road doesn’t have 400 side streets feeding onto it, testosterone fuelled SUV drivers muscling their way through tiny gaps and freshy boys on souped up motos playing Street Racer on the way to school. I tell you….every morning my ride is like a box of chocolates. You never know what will happen. Some days I actually get a clear run with no red lights, bodily threats or near misses and other mornings it’s like I woke up and it is National Kill A Barang Day.
Here is a little snap I took this morning at one of the main sets of lights in Phnom Penh. Intersection of Norodom and Mao Tse Tung Boulevards;
So you are looking at this and thinking WOW those cars are close ! Right ? Indeed they are but here it the thing. The Corolla on the left is on the wrong side of the road. It is actually in the oncoming lane. The SUV is in the TURNING LEFT lane but he is actually going straight ahead DAMN EVERYONE and me …..I’ll make the call which way I go when the starter drops the flag…….
